Biography

Juliet Mevi,  Visual Artist

BACKGROUND: Julie, a resident of Berkeley, CA , is an artist, and a  returned Peace Corps volunteer. While serving with the Peace Corps in Brazil, Julie,  was placed in the state offices of the Brazilian school lunch program. This is where she got her start in the art world. The Brazilians needed help developing menus and recipes but they also needed someone to develop educational materials.  Julie, was given a drafting table, paints, pens, ink and paper. She ended up primarily producing brightly designed posters, handouts,  and slides.  Back from Peace Corps, Julie earned a masters degree in public health from the University of California at Berkeley. During that time in order to  help support her education, Julie made and sold stained glass windows. She also picked up a paint brush and taught myself how to use oils and acrylics.  After several years working as an educator at a community college, she is now working professionally as a visual artist.  


ART EDUCATION: Julie has studied painting and figure drawing at Berkeley City College with art professors Susanne Yeiser, Evelyn Glauber and Mary Louise Stanley. At a the University of California at Berkeley Julie has studied with working artists, Glenn Hirsch, Larry Robinson .  She also studied with plein air  artist, Charles Waldman.


MEMBERSHIPS: Memberships include: The Oakland Art Association (OAA), East Bay Plein Air Painters Group ( EBPAP),  California Art Club, NCWCA, WCA, and  Pro Arts  in Oakland


GROUP and SOLO SHOWS: Julie has shown her work in several solo and group shows including the Piedmont Art Association,  The Flyway Festival, San Leandro Art Association, ,  Berkeley City College,  Frank Bette Center for the Arts,  Oakland Art Association, Pro-Arts New Visions, East Bay Open Studios (EBOS), Studio Gallery, ARC Gallery,and Expressions Gallery.
